I need to be pointed in the right direction as far as how to go about changing the port settings on my server. I have some serial connections that I need to change to ethernet. I know I have to change the port settings on the digiboard. Where are the config files for the digiboard and any tips on the setup of the ports would be very helpful. Thanks

digiboard configurations are contained in the /etc/inittab (/etc/conf/init.d/epca or pcxx or something else depending on the model of digi)
you can also set other configuration options in a startup script using the ditty utility.

the digiboard interface ports on the PcXem, Acceleports, or PC16e (i) are strictly serial ports and while you might be able to run PPP or SLIP protocols over them you would not run "ETHERNET" over them.
If you are adding an ethernet connection to your server you would add a NIC or Network interface Card to your system and then connect it to an external HUB or SWITCH. If you don't want to go the HUB method you could use a coaxial cable (10base2 as opposed to 10baseT or 100baseT). The terminal end would also have to change to use a NIC card from a serial connection.

Hope This Helps

I use the ethernet over the digiboard with modular adapters going from RJ-45 to DB25. It is strictly for proprietary software. Thanks for the help.

We have a couple of hundred customers with systems running various digi products that we are trying to get switched over to ethernet connections for a new client/server configuration of our application. I am very curious how this ethernet connection can be achieved thru the digiboard connections (generally they are rj45 connections already).
Can you tell me how you are cofiguring this?

thanks

Digi also has a built in utility for changing serial port settings. As root you use mpi. Brings up a series of windows that are pretty much intuitive.

Wouldn't you better describe this as using rs232 over ethernet rather than ethernet over 232.

I'm also looking forward to further information from you.

Stan,
forward you email address, I have a customer that has moved from terminal emulation 232 to terminal emulation ethernet and I will forward the list of changes that he made. Currently they are running across T1 lines between Atlanta and West Palm Beach through the net with Linux firewalls. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

It could be that this person is using a PortServer and is using the local login to the PortServer to provide an rlogin or telnet session?

i have come across many people assuming rj45 meant ethernet.
usually the goof is on arnets... but could this be a mistake too? sounds like the jacks are serial only.

sf1104, can you verify if this is indeed a Digiboard PortServer you are talking about? it is for serial devices but the DPS is networked to server(a terminal server).
