I have from one of my customers an SCO 5 DAT backup tape of his data. I need to restore the data from this tape. The problem is that I don't have any unix systems available to me. Only windows nt and 2000. Is there a way to read this tape into an nt computer?...

What backup program wrote the tape? If you cat get the program on NT then you might be able to read the backup.

Unfortunately I don't know since the SCO machine was burnt to a crisp in a fire. The company that sold it originally has been less than helpful (I also think they don't know what they sold), therefore my problem.
Someone mentioned that with SCO 5 most likely it would have been a tar backup. I have tried reading this tape with CA and Veritas products without success. I know I need some utility that will dump the tape out and then maybe I can re-construct it (yeah, I know, lots of luck there too)... but at least is a chance.

WinTAR SCSI by Spiralcomm will allow you to restore Unix/tar backups to an NT system.

There are many back up programs available for SCO like Lone-tar and BRU. If a third-party backup program was not used then you have two (that I know of) choices for natvie backup on SCO. The first is tar, as you mentioned, and the second is cpio. thekid's suggestion will probably work for tar, maybe someone else can suggest one for cpio.

As an expen$ive solution, you could sent the tape to a company like Data Recovery ( ). They can analyze the tape and usually recover the data into a format of you choice.

Thanks everyone. WinTar did the trick perfectly. You may however be aware that the demo version of this package is limited to the first 1200 files on tape, but the price of $90.oo makes it a very worthwile little ditty for these occassions.
THANKS AGAIN FOR YOU TIMELY TIPS.
