i have about a 4 year old server where in the last 2 months
[as the customer says] refuses to shutdown and restart

they use #shutdown -y -g0 -i6
the shutdown starts then just hangs requiring a power cycle

i have had them wait for over 1 hour and it just sits. no extra console messages, nothing

the system boots up just fine afterward and cleanly so this happens after the filesystems are marked ok and stuff.

in the messages log all i see before the hard power off is
WARNING: RX buf 1424 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1443 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1445 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1454 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1514 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1515 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1527 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1547 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1587 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1608 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1625 is still in use
WARNING: RX buf 1629 is still in use
over and over.

Does this mean anything to anyone? I did look into anything COM related based on the RX thinking receive but this system has both modem ports disabled and has no extra com boards present. everything is telnet.

Any Ideas?

Hi, Steve.

What's in the more detailed /usr/adm/syslog before those messages?

Go far enough back in time to examine around the first time the messages started appearing.

That looks like something thrown out by an application of some sort that can not shutdown properly for some reason.

So, look at the logs found in /etc/rc0.d/messages and grep for "RX" in any of them.

This might be caused by the "wall" command which is run from the shutdown script. Just for a test, try this instead (make sure all users are off):

# init 6
