I'm kind of new to Unix, and was hoping someone could help me with an issue I'm having.
SCO 5.0.2(fresh install) no supplements or updates
Dell PowerEdge 2600
RAID 1 on 2 drives, and RAID 5 on 3 drives.
I'm doing a transfer of a system froman Pentium 2 to the Dell. The old system is 5.0.2 as well.
The problem I'm having is that I can't get the data from the old server to the new.
Actually it's pretty inconsistent. I was able to get the data on the new server when I was testing, but after placing it in production. I am having an issue getting the dat from the tape. The tape is DDS3, and is compatible according to Dell with the tape drive.
I am able to do backups and restores of 6.2GB of data on the new Dell server, so I know that the tape drive is working.
Now I am trying to remove tape drive compression. I read somewhere that this can be an issue between tape drives.
I can set the compression on the old server to 0, but when I try to view the comnpression on the Dell I receive a message 'tape: unable to do 'getcomp' command on '/dev/xct0' : Invalid argument'. I'm assuming that the Dell is at 3, which I believe is the default.
Will a tape which is written a non compressing drive be read on a tape drive that has compression enabled, or do I have to disable it as well. If I can't run the command to set it, can I change a file so that it changes the default setting to 0 at boot. I notice on the old server, that the compression changes back to 3 after reboot.
If you're asking yourself why the customer is still using 5.0.2, all I can say is that's the OS he originally had, and that's what he wants to stay with. I know it works, because I used a backup of their data for testing, and replicated their production environment, but now their data has changed, and I need to update it, but it's just been one roadblock after another.

Thanks for your help in advance

WARNING: Pentium4 and Xeon processors may be damaged if running OSR older than 5.0.6A.
A PowerVault DAT (Archive Python) is supposed to be able to read DDS3 tape, either compressed or not.
If the behavior is that the tape driver thinks the DDS is empty, you may consider to powerdown the Dell server and try restoring the data just after the cold restart.

Hope This Help, PH.
