is it possible to have an SCN between these releases? I can build the trunk and force calls across the trunk but no SCN. I know it's long shot just figured id ask.

No the SCN wont come up the trunk only works bidirectionally if the service types are set to none.
if only working bidirectionally you have a network configuration issue.
this could be a reason why SCN does not come up but a previously stated it is an unsupported configuration even if you do get it to work
