Hi and thanks in advance,

We use Windows 98 systems on a Novell network. McAfee now works fine on all but 2 of the PCs.

On the 2 problem PCs:
- scans never complete (have to kill the task),
- the file counter is not displayed (during the scan),
- the program does not respond to the STOP button,
- program does not respond to the window Close button,
- File - Close does not work.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled and applied SuperDats multiple times without no effect.

I have gone through the complete removal of the products including the autoexec modifications, registry entries and directory remnants with no luck.

If anyone has any real hit on this issue I would be very appreciative.

Thanks again.

I have experienced a similar problem with VOL freezing at
c:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS\WIN98_58.CAB\wl32dll.dll ...... I was informed by McAfee that a fix for that would be included in a download in mid-December, but that has not happened for me yet.

Since your not running the latest version...

UPGRADE to 4.5.1 SP1

McAfee says to disable scanning for compressed files until a fix is released. This will skip over .cab files, but will also skip over .zip and other compressed files. This is not the best fix, but if you are running Windows98 first edition and have the .cab files on your local hard drive and in the path of McAfee VirusScan, this is the only way to prevent VirusScan from crashing, short of removing or renaming win98_58.cab to something like win98_58.bac while scanning.

P.S. YOu could also upgrade to Win98 second edition.

Instead of renaming it, just add the directory where the .CAB files are into the Exclusion list.

And, follow FatesWebb's advise and upgrade to 4.51 SP1. This way you don't need to follow my first advice :)
