scanning peripherals

hi there,
i want to create somekind of a peripheral scanner that will automatically scan the pc and take notes of all peripherals attached (e.g network card), any suggestion on doing that ?

i think there is specific port address espically for plug and play devices
at which these devices send infos to pc

I guess you may find what great infos if read something about i/o ports
