I know very little about virus's in general but it seems they are sometimes vb script files with the extension and icon changed to appear to be something else other than the executable they actually are.
Is there any virus scanning softwrae out there that can scan mails as they pass through the exchange server to check if the attachment has been disguised.
Surely this has been thought of before?

Yes, there are. Most (AV/email) scanners look at the contents of the attachment not just the extensions. Also, firewalls can be set to block certain extensions (whether or not they they are hidden) and you can tell your e-mail software to show you all extensions. James P. Cottingham
