Scanning bar code and storing their values into variables?

I am brand new to programming with bar codes. I am researching a project where I will need to be able to scan a bar code and be able to store it's value in a variable to use on an Active Server Page. Is this possible?

Also, I will need to be able to create create new barcodes, scan them and print them out. Any recommendations for software?
