Scanner will not load

Hi,
I have been trying to help a friend load a scanner (Just a plain scanner) onto his computer. He has a Compaq Presario with WinXP, and is trying to load an HP 5300c scanner.
The problem is that it gets so far then stops, and says
"unable to start the application. the Java machine cannot be loaded. Class not registered."
Any ideas what this means? I have completely removed the software and tried loading it fresh, but get the same thing. I also tried to download the latest Java software, but alas, no such luck.
I would appreciate any help with this. Any at all.

Try going into the system registry using regedit. Do a search for the printer and delete every instance you find. Then try re-installing. HP devices can be a royal pain in the bottom. I have a multi function HP and have lots of headaches loading it properly.
