scanner software will not load 2

I am running Windowsxp Pro. I am tring to hook-up a Mustek Bearpaw 1200cu scanner. I believe I downloaded the driver for xp successfully. However, the software download will not load. Is there such a thing as Generic Software for scanners. My machine reconizes the scanner in device manager. But, I get a no twain driver and a variety of error messages. Please help me. Thanks

Some scanners seem to need the original software installed first(even if you have to use compatibility mode to run it).

Reboot, then try the updated drivers.

If that doesn't work, look for clues on the Usbman site.

Thanks Andy! However, I can't load the software it is 16 bit and xp pro won't load it. I downloaded the updated panel and sill cant' load it. At this point I'm not even sure the xp driver is loaded. Isn't that the twain driver or is that another driver altogether? Device manager is seeing the Bearpaw 1200 scanner under imaging device, but there is no way to access it without the program. I'm really at a loss. Thanks again.

Yes Andy I have, but I keep getting the msg windows can't load 16 bit program. That seems to be the problem.

Hi Lorraine,

You are logged on as an administrator, aren't you?

Can you try to run the downloaded *.exe file in compatibility mode(right-click it/properties/compatibility) for .. say Windows 2000 and then apply it and run the file?

Yes I am admin. Tried compatablity mode and it still didn't work. Say cannot load 16 bit.

And you're sure that you downloaded the XP certified drivers?

Perhaps it's time to download the individual parts for the program; they may work. Or the 'compatible'(Win2k) set.

You're not using the 64bit version of XP are you?

YES I downloaded the winlogo xp version. And the panel and the whole 18.5 meg pack. I running Windows xp Pro. I believe it's 32 bit. Thanks I will try the win 2000 pack. Thanks again for your help.

Go to "safe" mode. Go into "device manager" and see how many "ghost" entries you have for scanners. Delete anything that has to do with scanners and reboot to normal, letting windows find it again.

Thanks Micker377, I did that and divice manager reconizes the bearpaw, and says it is working properly. However I can't access the scanner without the program which I can't load because it is 16 bit and I am running Winxp Pro- 32 bit. I have original disk but, it won't load because it's 16 bit. I downloaded updates from Mustek for xp and that is also 16 bit. I'm at a real loss.... Thought maybe there was some sort of gerneric program around that might access this scanner. Thanks again.

Very confusing, since you can go into the registry and find all the 16 bit programs that are running. I would believe this is a problem with the software. Have you contacted Mustek support and asked for a solution?

Yes, no help from Mustek. I finally got it so I can access the scanner through other programs, such as word or picture it. Just can't use all the funtions of the scanner without the mustek software. I guess it's time to buy a new one.
