Hi. Comtech, you were helping me out with Scanner Software thread.
Anyway, a friend gave me a Canon scanner. Specifically the Canon D66OU usb flatbed scanner. I installed the software that it brings and the driver from the CD. It comes with a program called Scangear, Photostudio and Scansoft Omnipage. Have you heard of those before?
Anyway, the scanner driver shows on the device manager screen (Windows 98) as installed and working properly, but when I open the scanner sofware, it says that it could not establish a connection to the scanner. The computer is a Compaq with USB ports in the front and two in the back. Furthermore, I have a USB web camera installed in the USB ports in the back, and it works fine. So I connected the scanner to the camera's USB port, and it still doesn't work.
If the camera works fine in the USB port, then I have no reason to go mess with the Bios USB settings, correct? Additionally, I installed the scanner at work on a WIndows 98 system, and it worked fine, so I know that its working.
Anyway, thanks for any help

What do you think of a canon scanner? Are they good?

The scanners are good, the software is junk (just my opinion).
Usually the install process involves running the installation setup with the scanner UNplugged, and then the installer will prompt you to plug it in.
When USB devices refuse to work like this, I usually see if there's any updates on the web, uninstall all software/drivers for the device, and then boot to safe mode, remove all USB devices/ports, restart and let things install.
What you probably need are updated twain drivers, included in the package on the link below.
The camera works, so no need to mess with USB settings in BIOS.
Canon has plenty of updates and stuff on the site (possibly the worlds longest URL):
Cheers,
Jim
