Scanner scanning black images

I know a few posts have been made about this subject, but I think the problem I have isn't discussed.

I have a Canon DR-5020 document scanner. right now I'm scanning over the network.

I can communicate with the scanner at low dpi values, but not high values. when I do scan successfully(meaning the paper gets fed through the scanner and some result shows up on my screen), it only comes up with a black image. it's not solid black, though. it looks like a screen out of Pong. solid black with tiny dotted white lines going across...almost like looking at a 13 lane highway from a bird's eye view.

I think that it's definitely a digital result...meaning I don't think it's the scanner's light being burnt out. the scanner is brand new.

any suggestions? any info you might need?

first I would try to duplicate scan errors with sys connected locally. If prob happens locally, need to check out driver. If ok, try stepping down the network connection to scanner. Try connecting at half-duplex and keep stepping down base speed (ie from 100 half-duplex to 10 half-duplex)

Sounds like bits are being dropped during transmission. My scanners both use higher speed connections. The first was SCSI; the second is firewire or USB High Speed. How is scanner connected to the network? How fast is the network? How fast is the computer, and how does it connect to the network?

I was originally planning on using this product called ScanShare Pro (a scan server, similar to a print server) to scan through Citrix. Certain registry settings needed to be changed on my Win2k Terminal Services server before I could use it. Turns out that my scanning application is proprietary and the registry entries it made were not in the spot Microsoft's KB article on the subject indicated.

Now I'm trying to use the scanner over the network because I don't have a SCSI card in my local machine yet.

I orginally had to lower the dpi for the scanner to not freeze up while scanning over the network. It's only duplex options are "on" or "off" because I'm using the scan server's software (thin client). This software means we don't need a dedicated PC to use the scanner.

Bottom line...I don't have duplex options because it's not hooked up locally and the drivers aren't used locally. The drivers have been installed, but when you scan into an application there's the scanner's model number and a "scanner" called ScanShare Pro. From here I'm going to get the SCSI card, install it locally and try to use citrix to just transfer the PDF files over manually.

I know I should expect better troubleshooting options when I have it installed locally to my PC. I'll be getting the SCSI card today and I'll post my progress later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks for the great suggestions.
