I am trying to help a friend of mine with a scanner issue. He said when he scans an images it's giving him three images instead of one. He's using an HP Scanjet 5300C. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Scanner gives me multiple images

That seems like a pretty fancy scanner.
Questions that seem logical to ask:
Is he using HP software, or something from a third party?
The scanner can produce image files in a large number of formats; which format(s) are the files in? Does he see multiple images in more than one format?
Are the images identical, or are they, e.g. color separations?

HP Software, whatever came with the scanner. The images are the same, no color separations. They are in jpeg format

It appears that scanner does not work with Vista, Win7, or Win8.
We have now pretty much exhausted my knowledge of scanners. Sorry.
