i have a dell dimension 4100 with 256k of memory. i just purchased a canon N670U scanner. my system recognizes the new hardware and installs it. however when i try to install the drivers the the drivers won't install.
i had a problem a few weeks ago with the nimda virus.i thought my virus software caught it all though it didn't--it resulted in my not being able to download files. however a fix i found on this site (a registry edit) took care of that. perhaps it is related. any thoughts anyone?

Not familiar with either bits of kit... What O/S are you using, and what i/f is the scanner? E.g. if it's USB, have you enabled USB ports in the BIOS, and does your O/S have necessary s/ware installed? If parallel port i/f, have you selected bi-directional in BIOS?

sorry--win me and its a usb. power supplied thru the cable.
the scanner just came on the market a few weeks ago.

Try taking it out of the device manager and reboot. Then install the drivers by add remove hardware and pick the device.Pick imaging device have disk. Then after it is installed plug the scanner in.

i tried that. good thought but didnt resolve the problem. the add new hardware screen still freezes(not responding) when i try to get it to read my cd with driver setup.

Try copying the drivers to the hard drive and point the wizard to the folder instead.

.."however a fix i found on this site (a registry edit) took care of that."...
I sincerely hope you have but:

Have you visited Symantec and looked at removal steps?

Symptoms(some only)

Presence on any root drive of "admin.dll"
Presence of readme.eml

BTW: When Nimda strains attack McIntosh they "cradle in USB to Serial connects" quote from article, MacWorld I think.

Good Luck
