A friend has a weird problem on his compaq 7973 system.
Somehow if he runs scandisk in windows, what he did weekly before, and moves his mouse he will get a blue screen.
If we however start scandisk and use the tab and pointer keys we can run scandisk. At least that is what it looks like. Even after waiting for quite some while we don´t see much of a progress.
After a while when we move the mouse again scandisk will crash and will come up with the windows message "This program performed an illegal instruction and will be shut down"

Anyone any ideas to restore scandisk to function again without restoring Windows 98?

Thanks in advance,

John

try doing scandisk this way...

restart your computer in ms-dos mode
when that's done, you should see c:/win> or something like that, type the following :
scandisk

this will start scandisk in real mode. usually this is a faster way to complete scandisk (definitely wont be interrupted unless u got some bigger problem on your hands)
say yes to do surface scan

after the scan, you will be taken back to the c: prompt, to reach windows just type this:
exit
or you can also type:
win

for the BSOD (blue screen of death), note the message (error code)shown and look into the Microsoft knowledge for additional info

hope helps
