My PC is a mess, and its about time I reformatted the hard drive.
Trouble is my computer can't seem to get through Scandisk (even in Safe Mode - I use Windows) and it freezes 3/4 of the way through. I have been told that it is not a good idea to reformat your hard drive when there is obviously a problem like this.
What can be done?
Thank you in advance

Are you running scandisk from windows? If so be sure your Screensavers are turned off and I would also disable advanced power management in control panel. What you probably really should do is this. Boot to a pure dos prompt (tap F8 at boot and choose command prompt only)>
At the C: prompt type the following:
scandisk/autofix/surface/all then hit enter.
This needs to be done every now and then from dos. when thru - boot to windows and run defrag.
Then go to start-programs-accessories-system tools- and run disc cleanup.
