Hi
The problem i have with my 3 week old IBM Deskstar 46.1gb hard drive is when running scandisk on thorough mode(automattically fix errors). After scanning to approx 1,032,000 of 1,406,846 segments the drive slows down considerably in scanning. After approx 24 hours the drive had only scanned 1,052,000 segments. The mouse pointer became sluggish.I ran scandisk in standard mode with no problems.I have previously scanned this drive on thorough before with no problem, this took about 5 hours to perform.I used ontrack data advisor wesion 4.10 and no faults were found.Defragged the drive with no problems. After running scandisk my drive is now showing that it has 647MB used space and 42.3GB free space, although the drive is empty in windows. Please help.

Regards Stephen Wilkinson.

See other ScanDisk thread ...

It seems one way of getting the best results for ScanDisk is to use the Safe Mode via a Boot Disk.

I tried the DOS mode of ScanDisk, which does not scandisk very well for long file names, due to DOS limitations.

I've tried to automate the Task Manager to do this, but it will only enable Standard level, not Thorough level scans.

I need help to create a Safe Mode Boot Disk autoexec.bat file with all the proper files. I think I can get most files via "Create a Windows Recovery Disk".

Thanks, Dave.

Just tried via Safe Mode, confirmed only ScanDisk & Explorer was running.

Still got 2 messages - "Windows has restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing to this drive. ...."

Any ideas how to work around this ScanDisk problem?

You can either:

Run Scandisk in safe mode

or

Run Norton Disk Doctor

NDD seems to handle thorough scans of larger drives faster than scandisk, but to be fair, scandisk is free, NDD isn't :)

HI people,

1]I seem to be having the same problem in that I have closed all open on start up programs but the message SCandisk has started 10 times still comes up.:-(
Then I saw that I should be running it in safe mode but how do I get it to that
thanks.

2]I was trying to defrag cos I used winoptimizer2000 and it said, cant do this cos of disk errors.

3] What exactly causes these and can I prevent them happening if so how?

To start the PC in Safe Mode, press F8 while booting, right at the point where you hear the beep. From the resulting menu, select Safe Mode. The PC will run without memory managers, device drivers etc., so Windows will take longer to start but you can run Scandisk OK without being interrupted by other processes.

Well I finally managed a thoro scandisk by closing everything except explorer.
Then I defragged successfully, just left it running overnight. The difference in run speed is phenomenal.
So persevere.
