Hi,
I have two questions on AIX 4.3.3:
1. During the backup I get a very high memory scan rate (reaches 600) whether in normal cases its less than 40. what am I may doing wrong?

2. To monitor the resources conumed by each process I use "ps aux", however it gave wrong answers regarding the CPU consumption, what other tool I may use?

Thanks alot
Aly

1. What is memory scan rate?

2. How do you know they're wrong??

Cheers

1. scan rate is the number of mameory scaned pages to be swaped due to in-sufficient memory (high scan rate means high memory demanding leading to the fact of lake in memory resources)
2. I made a dummy loop script that consumes all the CPU resources (sar gives 0 Idle) and yet I still see the this script consumes only a very little CPU percentage and even the sum of all the processes is less than 100%

How many processors do you have??

Can you post some vmstat output??

Cheers

IBM PSERIES 660 MODEL 6H1
2x750 (2 ways) MHz CPU, 2GB RAM

I'm running my own scripts to gather and get a hourly average, the output is something like that:
(Hour)(RAM utilized %) (scan rate) (free RAM)
0:08 99.9548 14.6064 0.00727273
1:08 99.9783 650.083 0.395455
2:08 99.9853 342.329 0.171818
3:08 99.9747 339.169 0.964545
4:08 99.985 428.483 0.192727
5:08 99.9404 284.044 0.402727
6:08 99.9257 1.46 0
7:08 99.9269 1.48636 0
8:08 99.9279 0.938182 0
9:08 99.9326 1.85364 0
10:08 99.9397 1.09909 0
11:08 99.9188 0.210909 0
12:08 99.9114 0.286364 0
1308 99.9114 2.36636 0.00363636
14:08 99.9028 0.0909091 0

Each reading represents the average of the previous hour as I get a reading every 3 second.
