ive been having problems with my laptop crashing (see thread1091-1049779 for full details)

at first i thought it was overheating, but i was doing a little experimenting last night and found that the laptop crashed mid-scan.

when i try and rescan it says would i like to continue from the last file (default.ico [see other thread for full path]) i click no and do a full rescan.. and boom it crashes again.. run the scan again when it reboots and the same file is mentioned when it asks me to continue or start fresh.

so..

1) has anyone had a similar problem?
2) how exactly does avg store last scanned file? (ie is this particular filename just coincidence)

thnx in advance

Hi Doozer

Have you tried switching off the 'scan at boot up' (if possible) and find the default.ico file right click and scan just that file.

If you can't do that,
Copy an icon file (any will do) to a floppy (or cd) start it in DOS mode.

navigate to the folder
Er hows it go I forget, right

CD\
CD program files\microsoft picture it! 9
delete the offending file
DEL default.ico

copy the new one in
try
COPY a:\icon.ico c:\program files\microsoft picture it! 9\default.ico

otherwise
COPY a:\icon.ico c:\program files\microsoft picture it! 9
then rename

CD program files\microsoft picture it! 9
rename any old icon file as default.ico
REN icon.ico default.ico

scanning the file in the directory doesnt cause the system to crash.

but then i imagine that if it says last file scanned was default.ico... the crash occurs on the next file which will be unknown?!?

You could try replacing the icon anyway

gah... will have to wait and see

its doing its "ill pretend to boot then crash" thing again (after running a scan)

hmm could this be a resource issue??

i just deleted the file default.ico and re-ran the scan... result.. crash again (after 4700 files)

however i was watching the processor usage and it was maxed out at 100% (on avgwb.dat?!?)

now on this PC the processor usage rarely goes over 60% (and its avgw.exe)

the laptop is a P4 3.?GHz with 512DDR
this PC AMD 3000+ with 512DDR

o and when i restart the scan it still says it was default.ico that was last scanned... so im guessing when it crashes the last scanned file isnt updated.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE:

ran trendmicros online scan... system crashed.

currently in safe mode running trendmicro again.

result... crash (after 250 files)

think its safe to say this is a hardware issue.

Just googled to make sure but the True vector engine you mentioned is part of Zone alarm. you could try disabling it.
