Scale an Image 1

I am terrible at image manipulation but would like to create a pic that is suitable size for a forum I moderate. I am using GIMP 2.2.7 on a Linux machine.

The image I have is a large image and I would like to scale down to the same size as this image:

The image I can't seem to re-size is this one:

Can someone please tell me how I can get Link #2 to be the same size as Link #1 using GIMP?

You could scale it the same but the car is too tall for the space and so will not have the same proportions as the example you give.
You could try to extend the width but that will take a lot of work.
The principle for scaling is to work out the ration of width to height, and crop your image to the same ratio. Then you simply need to resize to fit.
If no-one comes up with a better answer, I'll take a look at it for you.

OK, first thing to do it to change the canvas size from 1280x960 to 1280x422.
(images->canvas-size). Don't forget to click the chain link icon off before changing the sizes, otherwise both will change when you alter one.
Next scale the canvas (leaving the chain link icon ON this time) from 1280 to 416. This will automatically take the height to 137 (the same as your example).
From there you can add any borders that you might like.
Let me know how you get on. I have done this for you and I can let you have my altered copy if you like but it's probably better that you learn how to do it for yourself first.

Thanks so much for the help.

I scaled the canvas down and it still seems way to large but I will play with this now that I know scale canvas size is what I need to play with and I did not know about the "link" icon and what that did.

Last question I have is how to add a simple black or any color border around the image. I just find images with borders tend to look more professional and really help the pic.

There are many ways to do this. The obvious and simplest way is to use the "add border" script (Script-Fu->decor->Add Border) or maybe the "add bevel" script (Script-Fu->decor->Add Bevel).
Note that "add border" might change the size of your image so you may need to resize again after (Image->Scale Image).

I've had a busy week, so I haven't been able to get here as much as usual.

I also haven't done that much playing around with the scaling tools in gimp yet, so I thought I'd leave the question for someone with a little more experience.

It's nice to see some action in this forum. It's been awfully slow lately.

I gave you a star for your answer too. It was getting lonely there on the MVP list with just two of us.
