I have a network with an brand new dell PowerEdge SC440 running sbs 2003. All the latest updates from MS. All machines on the network are XP pro SP2 with all updates to include latest NIC drivers on both pc's and server. Here is my problem. We map a drive with a login script. It maps fine, you click on the mapped drive it opens right up. But if you click on one of the folders in there it locks the pc up, explorer.exe eats up about 300 meg of memory for about 40 secs then it lets you have access to all the files in the folder and pc is fine. I can access the the mapped drive on the server no problems so it is definitely a mapped drive across the network issue. I can \\servername\folder and it opens just fine, only the mapped drive is giving us fits any clues.

Thanks,
Ed

My guess is that it's workstation antivirus that's causing the issue, since it might treat a mapped drive letter like a local drive and possibly do an on-access scan, whereas it wouldn't treat a UNC path in the same way. You might try disabling real-time protection on a workstation and seeing if the same behavior persists.

Yeah I though that too, unistalled anitvirus alltogether still does it. It is funny, you can click on the mapped drive and it comes right up, all your files and folders that are in there appear no problem, but as soon as you click on one of them to open it whether it is a file or folder, locks the pc up.

I have a similar problem with a standard 2003 server. The olny way I have been able to fix it is to rebuild the users profile.

Does this happen with one file type more than another?
