Hi guys, let me start off by saying how helpful this site and in particular, this forum, has been.

I've got a sbs2003 premium server with about 65 user accounts. I've also got a secondary domain controller running 2k3 standard. Management is looking at adding 10-15 people over the next 6 months so I'm going to hit the user account limit soon. Since storage space is beginning to become an issue (160gb used of 200) on the sbs2003 server, I'm going to be getting a new machine that will eventually become a DC and host most of our files. The old sbs2003 hardware will probably be re-used as an exchange only box.
I'm trying to work out the details of how I'm going to do this.

My understanding of the transition pack is that it gives you separate product keys for w2k3 server, exchange 2003, sql and the IAS firewall product. If thats how it works, I (a side question: what type of media would be needed? retail? oem? volume? - we have a ms partner subscription so I've got whatever those are and some extra oem cds from other servers).

Am I on the right track here?

Will having the secondary DC in the mix cause any problems with running the transition pack?

You will want some extra retail or volume media around, since the TP comes with keys, but no new media for the components to install on other servers. I'd be a bit wary of OEM media. Partner subscription media will probably be fine.

Having the extra DC shouldn't cause you any trouble at all. Once you've run the TP, you can migrate some of the FSMO roles that are currently hoarded by SBS to the other box if you want.
