Hi,

I have a problem with Exchange on our SBS2003 R2 server. It logs an error in Event Viewer as follows:

"This event is logged when Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service (MAD) is failing to connect to one of the two Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) namespaces, "root/cimv2" or "root/cimv2/applications/exchange".
This issue can occur if the Exchange namespace has become unregistered in Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) on the system.
In essence, you will need to re-register the Exchange namespace in WMI. This can be done by running SETUP from the Exchange CD and choosing REINSTALL. If prompted to overwrite any files, choose not to overwrite."

Now as this is SBS not just Exchange 2003 on a W2K3 server, how can I go about reinstalling the Exchange part? On CD2 of SBS is the Exchange setup files. In \EXCHSRVR\I386\SETUP\ is the setup.exe - is it as simple as running this and following my nose?

Any advice is welcome.

Thx

Yes, that is how you would reinstall Exchange on an SBS.

Or you could also initiate the installation by opening Add/Remove Programs > Windows Small Business Server 2003, and on the Component Selection Screen change Exchange to "reinstall" which will then prompt you to insert Disk2 to continue.

Probably a bit cleaner if you do it through Add/Remove Programs.

You must then reinstall any Exchange Service Packs that were installed before.

Well, reinstalling the Exchange component via Control Panel seems to have fixed the issue with the WMI but has created another problem.

After reinstalling Exchange, I now need to reinstall SP2 but when running this it says that an older version of the Intelligent Message Filter is installed and needs to be uninstalled before SP2, with the new version of IMF, can be installed. However, from I can can find IMFv1 was a separate installation and would normally appear in the Add/Remvoe Programs window but it doesn't.

Any ideas how to uninstall it?

Thx

Thanks for the quick reply. I followed those tips and could not find the uninstall option.

By the way, I never actually installed IMFv1. This is a brand new server that I installed a couple of weeks ago and put SP2 on immediately. In X:\Exchsrvr\bin is a folder called MSCFV2 not MSCFV1.

I'll try the steps for the 'last resort' option and treat this MSCFV2 folder as if it was the V1.

Just to let you know that the 'last resort' option has worked.

Renaming the MSCFV2 folder, the dll and deleting the registry entry has now enabled me to reinstall SP2. There are now no errors in Event Viewer about WMI (fixed by reinstalling Exchange).

Thanks a lot for the help.

Cheers

Steve
