SBS Domain Rename?

Wondering if anybody has ever put any real effort into renaming an SBS domain.

I am aware that Microsoft does not support running the domain rename tool on a DC running Exchange. What I am wondering is if this would work if I were to setup a virtual machine as a second DC and ran the tool from that machine. Would the rename be successful? Would there be problems?

One of my customers is a law firm and one of the partners is leaving. They would like to be able to remove that partners name from everything and the name is part of the current domain NetBIOS name.

Anybody out there successfully renamed an SBS domain without a server rebuild?

Yikes. I suspect you'd run into a gaggle of issues with Exchange on the DC. There is always cleanup related to Exchange when you do the rename anyways.

I'd build an SBS environment in VS and try it there first.

Yes that is my plan Pat. Just trying to avoid even going that far if anybody has already tried it.
