Our SBS backup fails during the SBS backup process with the latest error . Actually i received different errors every day but i cant seem to resolve this issue.
Everything was working fine until i restored SQL 2000 databases from the old server. Now nothing wants to backup.
Should i rather use tape drive with Windows backup?

Event Type: Error
Event Source: NTBackup
Event Category: None
NTBackup error: 'An inconsistency was encountered in the requested backup file

Need more detail. Are you backing up to hard disk? What file system is on the target drive? Doing full or incremental backups? What is the data size, how big is the destination drive or media?

I hope you find this post helpful.

I'm backing up to hard disk and there is enough free space. NTFS on all drives. SBS only do full backups?? My data is about 50 Gb and is spread over multiple drives.
Every day the backup fails with a different error so its impossible to troubleshoot.
Latest error:

Backup Runner started.
Launching NTBackup: ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Backup\Small Business Backup Script.bks"
/d "SBS Backup created on 2007/05/17 at 09:00 PM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:ff /m normal /j "Small Business Server Backup Job" /l:s /f "F:\Backup\Backup Files\Small Business Server Backup (02).bkf" /UM NTBACKUP LOG FILE: C:\Documents and Settings\SBS Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\backup08.log =====================<BEGIN NTBACKUP LOG FILE>===================== The saved selection file "Script.bks" cannot be found.
The saved selection file "Script.bks" cannot be found.
=======================<END NTBACKUP LOG FILE>===================== NTBackup finished the backup with errors.

I found this solution but will it work for me?

The issue can also be caused by the incorrect content of the "script.bks" file. Open the Small Business Backup Script.bks file with the notepad. If you see:
JET SERVERNAME\Microsoft Information Store\Recovery Storage Group\ , this problem will appear because NTbackup is not able to back up the Recovery Storage Group either via the script or directly via the NTbackup GUI. To correct it, you can use NTbackup to remove Recovery Storage Group reference from the backup selection script:

The person removed the line JET SERVERNAME\Microsoft Information Store\Recovery Storage Group\ and now it's working

And do you have that entry in YOUR script.bks file?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Yes i have but is unsure if i should change the script.bks file. I have no backups of the server at this point in time and its been operational for more than a month.
Should rather use Windows Backup utility as SBS backup only do full backups and no incrementals plus it's not backing up company data.

Personally I always use the regular NTBackup, but the disadvantage to that is that you no longer get the nice backup snap in that shows status.

I would simply back up the file and modify it and see if that resolves your issue.

Also, you can manually run NTBackup without changing the scheduled SBS backup.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Some feedback:

I removed the line JET SERVERNAME\Microsoft Information Store\Recovery Storage Group from scrpit.bks and now it's working.

Excellent, thank you for reporting back with your results.

I hope you find this post helpful.
