I am administrating 2 separate SBS 2003 servers at different companies. 1 back up started to fail intermittently. Then the other one started to do it as well, now they fail everyday. This is the log file I am receiving from 1 of them, cant logon to other at moment for some reason lol.
The server this log file is from has SP2 installed and 2 x 36 gig drives with an HP72gig DAT tape system. The backup is complete as that is all you can do on a SBS and the tapes are changed daily.

=======================<END NTBACKUP LOG FILE>=====================
NTBackup finished the backup with errors.

I have tried several things and have even excluded each folder from the backup on both systems each day to see if I could find a file that was causing the problem but no luck. Now I am scratching my head as I have no idea and starting to panic cos if there was a fail and I needed the backup it might be missing something important. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

I'll bet the total space being backed up exceeds the capacity of the tape. Is that drive 72GB compressed?

Hi Thanks, but already checked that only 55gig being backed up from c: and d: tape is 72 compressed but should be plenty of space.

The best way to find out WHY your backup failed, is to actually read the NTBackup log file from the Backup snap-in. Then you can go from there to try fix any errors.

You know, all sorts of factors have to be in place for compression to actually work to the full 72gb. You will often find that "compression" doesn't double the 36 to be 72. It may only get you to 41, as your backup log indicated. The error you are getting is the exact error I get when my tapes have run out of room.

This sort of scenario is exactly why I am moving away from tape and going to disk. Right now I'm deploying Dell RD1000's for my clients. They are treated like disks by the on-site people, since they are swappable disk cartridges, but they are USB or SATA-based, so you don't deal with tape's foibles.

Hi Thanks for that, i thought ui had more like 60-65Gig on the tapes to play with hmmm thats a bit of a problem. will have to look at some sort of diffrent way to backup as well.
thank
