I have a client that has requested I setup a system to replicate their data between two sites. Naturally, they want this to be as CHEAP as possible. So I was thinking of trying to setup a DFS between the SBS 2003 (not R2) server and a Server 2003 R2 system. I'd also be setting up a point-to-point VPN using Windows RAS. Does anyone have/know of a guide for doing this?

You can do it, but forget about using any R2 features of DFS. You are going to have to work completely within the pre-R2 framework for setting up the DFS infrastructure. Because of that, there are quite a few basic walkthroughs for setting up DFS on a Windows 2003 server, just avoid any R2 guides.

The best thing to do would be to set up the DFS between the two servers on a local LAN and then ship one of them to the other site, so that you would have seeded the replication in a high-speed environment.

I was kind of planning on doing a compromise of that... I currently have the system at my data center and can bring it back to the main site for a replication... but we both have cable internet with 5 Mb uploads... and a RELATIVELY small amount of data to replicate.

I'm planning on working on this on Saturday, so I'll try to post back then.

Thanks for the response.

Well, "small amount of data" is relative. It's all in how soon you need the replication completed. If you have time, then I wouldn't worry about bringing the other server back to the NOC to do it.

I have to build a new server in a remote site for a client next week. But I have an entire week to replicate the data, so I'm doing it over the MPLS connection. No worries.
