We are inheriting a SBS 2003 server with exchange. We already have a 2003 R2 domain network with exch 2007 Sql 2005.

Is it possible to add this server to the domain?

Tell me if I'm wrong, but from what I know is that the SBS server needs to be the FSMO roles holder, GC server, and have no trust relations in place. [If this is true there is no way it can join my domain].

so what would the alternatives be?

MCITP:EA/SA, MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA, MCTS, MCP+I, MCP

SBS has major issues with being in a non-SBS forest and doesn't like answering to other servers for FSMO or any other major role.

IMO, your best option would be to reinstall the SBS server with R2, but if finances/logistics are a problem for this then reversing the roles of the two systems are an option, as adding the R2 to an SBS domain is do-able.

Alternatively, ditch SBS and put a Linux Server on the machine, adding it to your current domain as a non-windows app/file server.
