There are bits and pieces of this request posted, but none that lay the steps out in order.
I have a SBS 2003 Standard server that has failed. I have replaced the drives in question and everything is identical to the original hardware. The server supported 5 users, a couple of printers, Exchange, and remote access. The server does not use ISA - they have an external firewall. The server does use DHCP, WINS, etc. and all clients use Outlook to handle company calendars, email, etc. I have a valid FULL backup that was created with the SBS backup utility from the server management screens on tape.
Are these the proper steps and order for restoring?
1. Turn off all clients, network devices, etc.
2. Install a working OS with the same server name, ip address, etc. Do I have to install the same service packs and Win updates as before the crash?
3. Restart in directory repair mode.
4. Open ntbackup and run restore selecting everything except Information Store. Or should they be done in pieces - drives then system state, etc.
5. Restart in normal mode and restore Information Store.
6. Check that the server can connect to Internet, system services are running, etc.
7. Turn on client computers and live happily ever after.
Is that all that is required? What are the potential problems? I've never had to do a complete failure restore before - mostly files, or apps, etc.
Much thanks in advance.
