Have a 10-15 user network that has not configured Exchange, but wants to set up internal messaging now, no external e-mail, no ISP yet (but may want the option in the future). Have set up Win 2K3 Standard networks using IIS and POP3 service, so that the server acts as a forwarder within the internal network. Would like links to doc or advice about setting up Exchange after the fact, or if the POP3 service is a viable substitute. Coming in a little blind on this project, so any hints would be gratefully appreciated.

Excahnge is a much better solution (even if only for internal mail) than POP. With Exchange your can configure clients for Outlook over http or use OWA for remote access.

Advantages of Exchange over POP, POP pulls mail down to the client. With Outlook connecting to Exchange the mail stays on the mail server, plus you get shared calendars etc.

You can run through the Exchange setup and when prompted for a domain name type something like company.local.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Thanks, Mark.

That soothes some fears for me. I have read the "Intro to SBS 2003 for Enterprise IT Pros", and the SBS 2003 Tech Training Guide (both MS-produced docs), but would like any other resource links you might have for a little more detail on SBS version of Exchange. Thanks

There is no difference between Exchange on SBS VS any other 2003 Server. Management is the same.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

You might want to review the links on my SBS links page - you've read a couple, but your might find some of the others helpful:

Hints: USE THE WIZARDS. I cannot stress this enough. Even when you think you know how to do it better/manually, USE THE WIZARDS. Failing to use the wizards can cause problems now and/or later.

As for using Exchange, there's really little reason not to. Backing up PST files is a pain. Backing up Exchange is EASY.
