Apologies, could not find a SBS2000 forum on TT with google, nor anything relevant to this problem :

Cannot get internet access on the server, have not connected the clients yet:

Am helping a friend out who has just moved his SBS 2000 network into another location which has a preconfigured router already at the new location which has a non-nat ADSL service.

The server was only running one nic at the old location, but I have enabled the second nic and configured as below

(I can get my laptop onto the internet by putting the ISP supplied IP’s onto its nic, but fail when doing the same on the 2 nic server, proving the router is functioning correctly)

IP’s supplied :
Mailgate address 69.49.xx.162
Gateway / router 69.49.xx.161
SN 255.255.255.252

On the server I have set the External NIC to:
IP 69.49.xx.162
SN 255.255.255.252
DG 69.49.xx.161
DNS 192.168.16.1

On the server I have set the Internal NIC to:
IP 192.168.16.1
SN 255.255.255.0
DG Null (was previously 16.251, presumably the old router address)
DNS 192.168.16.1

I then ran the Internet Connection Wizard, but no luck. I am not to familiar with SBS 2000 by the way.

I need to get the internet access sorted as they run online training courses, where have I gone wrong ?

TIA

You need to run the gui internet and email setup wizard and it will do it all for you. Its in server management i think.

It basically enables routing in the server and internet connection sharing as there are effectively two different networks here

Are you sure that the server has a root-hints file, or is properly configured to forward DNS queries to the ISP's DNS servers? Your whole issue could actually be one of name resolution, if your main test is the ability to open a browser on the server.

Thanks both

I am sure the DNS is correct, will check the root hints when I get there this morning and post back

It would be simpler to use a basic router instead of SBS2000/ISA for the internet connection. I had a few SBS2000s with dual NICs but found it was easier/more reliable to use a router for internet access.

If you need to use ISA for other reasons then stick with it.
The Internet connection wizard in server administrator should sort out your issue, or at least is the first place to start.

Thanks to everyone who inputted on this one.

Update:

They have decided that it is not cost effective to troubleshoot this one any further. Net result is that their email and data will be hosted on another server that they will remote into (only 4 users on the problem server)

Thanks again

Paul
