Currently connected to SBC ,Wisc. ADSL.My connection seems to slow down considerably during 3 - 7 PM.My ISP tells me that there are no peaks in there service.Right now im flying, at 9:30,but I was world wide waiting at 5:00.Any suggestions?
DSL is a dedicated line from you to the DSLam, then a trunk to 'the internet' often a T3. if the ISP has oversold the capacity of the T3, then everyone on that DSLam will slow down when it is beyond capacity.
In a more general sense, 'the internet' itself slows down at times of peak load 3 to 7 in Wisconson would not seem to be that peak load.
Your ISP assigns you a DNS server, if either the server or the path to that server become congested, then web pages (lots of DNS lookups) may get slow while file transfers (just one look up at the start) stay fast.
is there any chance you do much of your surfing at one site and it becomes slow from 3 to 7?
there are tweaks you can do to your computer, but I assume they would affect all times
Some Ideas to try (I am assuming Windows, but would translate for other boxes)
in a DOS prompt IPCONFIG /ALL and get your DNS server Addresses
TRACERT cowswithguns.com and keep a print out
TRACERT you DNS IP addresses and keep a print out
when the web slows down, re run the TRACERTs did the one to cowswithguns.com slow down (it is the edge of the US) did the one to your DNS server slow down? if so was it RIGHT at the server or in the path?
(you want the path to your DNS server to have as few hops as possible, under 10 is good, as you go there a lot)
I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
