I have never been able to figure out how to save an image from a MS Word document. I've tried copying and pasting into other programs like Photoshop, but this is a lot of work and often degrades the image. All I want to do is save a .jpg as a .jpg or a .bmp as a .bmp, etc. right from the Word document. Any ideas?

Word does not hold them (unless they are linked to file, and even then they are not held) as JPG or BMP in the document. So you can not "save" them. Word uses graphic converters. So when you put a JPG into a Word document, it actually converts it into its own format (at least as far as the document is concerned).

If you insert a JPG into a Word document, then copy it, when you put that copy into a graphic application it is NOT a JPG. It is a RGB bitmap image. Technically speaking, once that JPG is inserted into Word, it no longer is a JPG.

So therefore no, I know of no way to "save" an image that is in a Word document. You can copy and paste in a graphic application like Photoshop. But as you mention there can be degradation.
