I have some files which will not save at all when turning on the "PDF Compatible File" option when saving .ai files. I've tried to save those files in other PDF/PS formats, which won't save either.

The curious thing is that some files never encounter this problem at all, I can work on them adding more and more layers, and still they don't show any problems.

I've searched the adobe forums (which curiously won't let me post anything even though I'm a registered user and have registered all my serials..., ), and a couple of other online boards/forums, to no avail.

The above is the short version of my problems, the reason that I need to save as PDF compatible files is that I import the .ai files into Adobe After Effects, and only the PDF compataible files load as correct compositions with all the layers in the file available for work.

My currrent "fix" is to copy the files from those files which eventually crash into new files (option + c and option + v). After doing that I loose a lot of information, namely the sublayers and the logical build of my objects.

This is really irritating, and adobe support is of no help, promising to send me e-mails, but they never materialize.

Poor Macromedia users if they are used to good support...they'll better pray that the merger falls short.

Paul:

When you use your workaround (which sometimes is the only way to rid yourself of pesky saving issues), make your copy of everything, then create a new document, and in the Layers palette flyout, check the option "Paste Remembers Layers". This way, when you paste, the layer structure will stay intact, and new layers will be named exactly what they were before.

Don't forget to turn off the option after you get done, otherwise you'll make pasting mistakes in the future...
