Hi,

My PC has become extremely slow and I want to re-install ( starting from format harddisk ) it completely.

On the other hand I would very much like to keep certain data by burning it on a CD. Is it possible to save my Outlook Express mailboxes and addressbook on a CD to restore them on the newly installed system ?

If yes , is it possible to save my Outlook Express mailboxes and addressbook created in W2K and restore them on a Win XP ?

Thx.

If you want to do it manually, here's the safest way to do it...

1. Go to file>folder>compact all folders
2. Exit the program, search for *.dbx (may have to turn on the ability for you to see hidden files in explorer), should be at least half a dozen of them, with a current date timestamp. Do the same for *.wab, this is your address book, one file. I would restore them on another computer if you can, or login to 2000 under a different name and restore them, make sure its all intact. Then format away!

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

You can also export your addressbook to a .csv file by clicking on File>Export and following the Wizard's instructions.

Good Luck! :)

I need to do this but have a query - if I save the mailbox, will it maintain the user ID and password? I have an Outlook mailbox and have forgotten the password and want to migrate it to my new PC. It's not easy to get the password reset so if there is a way of just exporting all the settings to my new PC, I'd love to know about it.

Anyone got any ideas?

Your mail account username & password are not kept with the mail store. If your new computer has XP, I believe that XP's File & Settings Transfer Wizard can pick up the mail account username & password.

I think I have sufficient answers on the first part of my question , ie. how to save mailboxes and addressbook.

I would like to come back to the last part of my question ,
is it possible to save my Outlook Express mailboxes and addressbook created in W2K and restore them on a Win XP ?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, the operating system is not an issue at all. The only thing that matters is the version of Outlook Express that you are using on each machine. As the XP machine will be running OE6 you should not have a problem importing from any previous version of outlook express.

If you would like instructions on how to import, please ask.
