Hi all

Client = Outlook 2003 with Exchange

When i open a message in inbox and click file save
1 - Where does it save the message
2 - What extension is it saved with.

I have searched and cant find any html or eml files that it would have saved as and it doesnt make sense to me to save it in the mailbox as that would happen anyway.

Thanks for any help

If you just click file/save it saves the msg back into the message store. I use this to annotate msgs in the subject field to make them searchable and to assign file #'s. However I don't have an exchange environment, so behaviour there may differ.

If you want to save the msg outside of outlook, use file/save as. Then you will get the usual file save dialog which lets you pick the location and a limited set of formats, the default being .msg into my documents.

thanks JM for the quick reply. If its saving it in the message store is that the ost file, isnt it already saved there anyway making the save button pointless.

I would have thought this would be the same if imap/pop as well, once the message is open and downloaded its saved locally.

Yes, it's pointless unless you have made changes.

As I mentioned I routinely add info to the subject line before saving. I find it very useful, especially when people respond to a prev msg with content unrelated to the subject without changing the subject line.

Thanks JM. I didnt even realise you could edit the subject in received mail.
