saving graphic as a jpeg in IE 6.026

I am using Windows XP professional addition. When I dowloaded a graphic file sent to me as a Jpeg file, Internet Explorer 6.026 forced me to save it as a bitmap file which is twice as big. I had no option to change the file format in the drop down dialoge box.
What can I do to save file as a smaller jpeg as I don't want the bitmap version..
