I am using Illustrator 10. When I save an image as a transparent gif, I get a white halo around it when applied to a dark backgroung on a webpage. How do I eliminate that? Please help.

GIFs, unlike PNGs, can only save one level of transparancy. Therefore, if you want to use anti-aliasing (the default) for smooth looking edges, it has to add a few pixels at the edge of your artwork to help it "blend" into the background. By default, it assumes the background is white, so when you place it on a dark background, there is a noticable halo effect.

There are two options for getting around this:

1: Turn Anti-aliasing off. On the right hand side of the "Save for Web" dialog, there is a tab called Image Size. Within that, there is an option to turn off anti-aliasing, and you need to press "apply" to make it take effect. Unfortunately, you have to give up smooth looking edges.

2:In the "Save For Web" dialog, there is a setting called matte. Clicking on white box allows you to choose a more appropriate colour to blend with. Pick a colour close to your web page background to reduce or eliminate the halo effect.
