I want to be able to give remote users access to an excel file that I do not want them to be able to save to their hard drive. I don't mind if they print it, but no local saving. I do want to give them the ability to 'save as' to the Sharepoint library. Anybody got any clues?

What is the point of this. The user can always copy and paste the content.

Anyways, if you do intend to do something like this it has to be done through the EXCEL API that handles the sharepoint document.

My suggestion is to provide partial data to the user and log each data request.

Well, that wouldn't do us any good. All I want is to give a user access to a file and it's functionality without giving them the ability to duplicate the file or it's contents.

Not sure I understand what you mean by your suggestion?

I believe you will need to use a MS Service called Information Rights Management. While I dont have it here I cant tell you too much about it other than you can set permissions to stop people, saving it, emailing it, printing it etc.

In an office app, if you go to File then Permission, thats where you set these permissions. But you need the service and that of course is $$
