Occasionally I have users that open up Excel or Word documents directly from an email attachment and make changes and click save and then close the document. When they open it up again, no changes appear and I get a call. Is there any way to recover these files?

Thanks

When they open directly from an attachment, the files are stored as temporary files in an Outlook folder, e.g. as "C:\Dokuments and Settings\[profile name]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKF10\Document name.doc"

When they open from attachment a second time, a second file is created, e.g. "C:\Dokuments and Settings\[profile name]\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\OLKF10\Document name[red] (2)[/red].doc"

Instead of just clicking the disk symbol, they should simply "Save As", and save the file to its correct destination.
Else they get several versions of the file.

The one they altered can be recovered simpl by browsing to said temporary folder and picking the right file...

Cheers,
MiS

We tried browsing to the location but he did not have a "Temporary Internet Files" folder. I enabled "show hidden files" but still could not locate. We also did a search for *.xls on the C: drive and could not find the file.

Thanks

I believe you also have to uncheck the box next to "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" in order to find the file.

What OS are you using?

Hope this helps.

Then try my suggestion above and look in the location that MakeItSo suggested. Your OLK folder may not be exactly OLKF10. The folder name is random after the OLK part. The reason I asked which OS is because the file path is different in Windows 7.

You could try doing a search for "Files and Folders" and type in OLK as the keyword. Set your search options to search hidden files and folders and protected operating system files.

Hope this helps.

And do not ever open files from attachments. We had such a legal issue with this that they now block attachments from being opened. People MUST save the attachments as a file. They can not open attachments.

Is there an way to force "save only" in Outlook or OE?

Thanks

How can you save a document before opening it?

Gerry

I would hazard to guess that brk was referring to "they now block attachments from being opened. People MUST save the attachments as a file." and asking how this was accomplished.
maybe?

It is accomplished using Policies at the OS level.
