Hi,

Just a quick query on whether I can save reports in CR 9 as CR 7 reports? I need to know this as our current software will only accept CR 7 format reports.

Thanks in advance,

Tony.

No. CR 9 reports can only be saved as CR 9 reports. Once a report is saved in CR 9, it cannot be opened in any earlier version.

hi
The version 9 Report Designer Component (RDC) cannot save a report in a previous version of Crystal Reports. The RDC can only save the file in Crystal Reports 9 format. The 'FileFormat' parameter for the 'SaveAs' method should not include Crystal Reports 7 and 8.

Apologies for phrasing my query incorrectly. We have existing reports on our ERP system which were created on version 7. In order for these reports to work they need to be in Cr 7 format. Could I not open these reports in CR 9 and then Save As..File Format..CR 7 format?

Many thanks for both of your replies,

Tony.

I have a similar requirement, I am writing reports in CR9.0 but would like to save them in 8.5 format. Even W Gates provides this kind of compatibility (!) Does anyone know of a 3rd-party conversion product?

hi

your looking for trouble.

If you have a report designed in ver 7 you can used ver 8.5 with no problem and vice versa.
But ver 9 thats a different story.
I you have 2 computer instal ver 9 on one and 7 on the other.
but you will see to version of your report.
STAY AWAY FROM VER 9 BUGSSSSSSSSS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>!!!!!
if you want trouble then get ver 9
you pay me now or pay me later

cheers

Hi pgtek,

What sort of bugs are showing up in ver 9?

Out s/w vendor has recommended it as we need the ability to format a dbase notes field in HTML. Many thanks for your advice.

hi

Your software vendor works on commission i bet
He does work with this stuff.
He's not the one that has to do the work or fix it

ver 8.5 should be able to do what you want to
check search this site and look at all the version 9
k base listed,

better be safe than sorry is my moto :)

cheers

My 2.35 cents worth.
I have 8.5 and 9 running on the same box with no problems. I've opened/changed/saved reports from versions 7,8.0,8.5 with 8.5 with no problems.
8.5 will format a SQLServer memo field in HTML, so I'm assuming it'll work with dbase. However, if you save as v7, I don't think that formatting is backward compatible.

Hi Tony

I have been using v9.0 for a couple of months and found the following problems, mostly to do with getting the cosmetic appearance right (my client is a graphic designer!).

I don't know if 2 - 6 would have been the same in 8.5 but I could not find it except as Developer Edition which seemed unnecessarily expensive.

1. There is (as you know!) no "Save As 8.5" option so the reports can't be accessed from within Exordia Job Costing which has an 8.5 viewer built in

2. The Autosave doesn't work properly, it defaults to OFF and doesn't seem to do anything useful when turned ON, I have on several occasions lost hours of work.

3. Crashes if you try to move a group of fields by dragging the right-hand edge of a field back past the left-hand edge

4. Re-sizing groups of fields (Same height etc) often does not work on some or all fields

5. Snap to Grid erratic, fields often fail to keep correct relative positions when moved as a group

6. Overlaying sub-reports is maddening, they creep horizontally or vertically by 0.07 cm (the thickness of the border line) when you turn the border on/off which gives just visible misalignment in the printout, you then have to add a corresponding offset to the co-ordinates.

Hi chrisjc,

Thanks for your comments. Really don't know what to do about this as I am not sure even whether 8.5 is still available to buy or not.

Will need to think long and hard on this one!

Thank you for your comments,

Tony.
