Crystal 8.5.

I have a report that must be transported to the end user as a tab delimited file, one tab between each field, no quotes around the text.

1) When I choose to save the report as either tab delimited text or tab delimited values, there are double quotes added around each text field. The end user cannot deal with these.

2) I tried exporting it to Excel,where it appears correct. Then from Excel, I saved it as a tab delimited file. The resulting file had no quotes, BUT there are two tabs between one set of fields and I cannot figure out why. Does the positioning of the fields on the crystal report have any impact on the number of tabs created between fields?

Do you have the latest patches and dlls? In 2003, there was a change in Crystal 8.5 exporting that improved it a great deal. If your export-choice says things like Excel Extended rather than MS Excel 97, then an update might fix it. I assume 'BO' still have them for Crystal 8.5 customers.

I've not actually done tab-delimited exports, so if you already have the latest version, someone else will need to help you.

I had the 2003 download, but went to BO site and also downloaded the 2004 patch. My export list of choices did grow, but it still shows Excel Extended, not MS Excel. When I tested the tab delimited, it gave the same results.

I was able to resolve the problem of extra tabs being created when I saved it from Excel into tab delimited by adding "trims" to all the fields. However, it would be nice to be able to export it directly to tab delimited from Crystal.

(I can't change to a newer version because one of my important software products is not yet compatible with anything over 8.5.)

Thanks for the response,

Harriet

It is possible to have Crystal 8.5 and Crystal 10 running on the same system. Does that help?

Can I have Crystal 8.5 and Crystal 11 on the same system?

I'd assume so.

If your set of export fields do not exceed a total length of 255 chars, you can create a set of String formulas for each field, using the Crystal 8.5 ToText feature, and enter them in a detail line formula as follows:

{@field1}
+ Chr(9)
+ {@field2}
+ Chr(9)
+ {@field3}

Then you can use the Crystal 8.5 Text export feature and create a Tab separated export without quotes. The Chr(9) is a Crystal formula for a Tab.

Creating the String Field formulas can be kind of technical, but you can check the Crystal Help = ToText, and learn how to convert Dates and Numbers to Strings

ToText examples:

ToText({Orders.OrderDate}, "MM/dd/yyyy") = a Date Formula
ToText({Orders.Freight}, "#######.##") = a Number Formula
