savf (save files)

Ok so I had a brain fart and cannot remember this but just how the devil to I populate a save file? I have a physical file that the "recommended(?)" method of moving it from one system to another is to use savf and sndnetf. For the life of me I cannot remember how to get the physical file data into the save file.
