When I try to save my Frontpage web page, I get the following error: Server error: Page index is checked out by ( myself ).

Go to Tools - Web Settings. Under the General Tab, uncheck Use document check in & check out.

That is usually used for servers.
Meaning if you ahve a few peple that edit the pages via the server - I check it out to work on it & this would prevent you from working on it / saving it until I have saved it. So yes - leave it unchecked.
