When right-clicking to 'Save picture as...' IE 5.5 comes up with 'Cannot complete operation due to error 8007ffff'. My OS is Win95 4.00.950 C. Installing SP2 made no difference. Closing and re-launching IE clears it for a while but it recurs. Help!
From Microsoft, different version, but still may apply.
Right-Clicking, Selecting 'Save Picture As' Does Not Save Image with Correct Extension
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5, 5.01 for Windows 98
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.01 for Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5, 5.01 for Windows NT 4.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 for Windows 95
SYMPTOMS
When you right-click an image in Microsoft Internet Explorer, click Save Picture As, and save the image, the file name extension is missing when the file is saved.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when the file name has multiple periods. When a file name in the File name box contains a period (.), Windows Millennium uses the text after the last period as the extension of the file, regardless of the information in the Save As Type box.
For example, if you save the image Mscom.w2000.site., with a .jpg extension appearing in the Save as type box, Mscom.w2000.site is the resulting file name, and the .jpg extension is missing.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior, add the proper extension to the file name in the File name box.
Not positive, but I've heard if you enclose the filename in quotes using the extension you prefer, it will save correctly.
Reghakr - thanks again, but not applicable.
Smitee - I am amazed how many people have had this prob and yet there seems to be no solution!. Re-installing windows or even formatting and starting again seem a heavy-handed approach.

SYMPTOMS
When you use the Save Picture As option for a graphics file in Microsoft Internet Explorer, you are only allowed to save the file as a BMP file, even if the file is in another format, for example, GIF or JPEG. The file name may also appear as 'Untitled'.
CAUSE
There are several reasons why this issue may occur.
This issue may occur if your Temporary Internet pages cache is full.
This issue can occur if you have "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" selected in Tools, Options, Advanced Tab and are loading the page over a secure connection (https).
This issue can occur when you connect to a Web site using an address that contains <usernameassword>. For example, the server is accessed through
Please see the following KB article for information on an additional cause:
Q250747 Right-Clicking, Selecting 'Save Picture As' Does Not Save Image with Correct Extension
WORKAROUND
You can use any one of three methods to work around this issue.
Workaround for Cause 1
To resolve, delete the temporary internet files by selecting Tools, Options, General tab and select the Delete Files button.
Workaround for Cause 2
To workaround, uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk" from Tools, Options, Advanced Tab. Then select View, Refresh to reload the page.
Workaround for Cause 3
Method 1
Open the Temporary Internet Files directory and locate the image that you attempted to save.
Right click the image and click Open.
When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click the image and click Save Picture As. The correct file type and name should be correct.
Method 2
Type in the direct path to the image that you wish to save.
When the image loads into Internet Explorer, right click the image and select Save Picture As. The correct file type and name should be correct.
Method 3
You can also save the file in BMP format, and then covert the file to the desired file format using a graphics editor.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
Reghakr - thanks again, but the point is that as soon as I click on 'Save Picture As...' I get the error message - I don't get the file save dialogue box so those answers are not really appropriate. I have just noticed (via Ctrl+Alt+Del) a program called 'Trantor_' running which may or may not be connected to the problem.
Smitee - thank you - but this is Trantor_ (which I now know relates to S3 Video) and not Trantor. Either way a red-herring as far as error 8007ffff is concerned.
Go to Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs, scroll down until you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 & Internet Tools, click the Add/Remove button and select repair.
Or go to Start>Run, type msinfo32, click the Tools menu and select Internet Explorer Repair Tool.
Yes, I have used the repair tool and also re-installed SP2. Start>Run>msinfo32 gave me 'Can't find msinfo32 or one of it's components...' though. I think the answer must lie somewhere in the registry or within IE itself - it is strange that Microsoft don't answer the problem in the KB
Reghakr - Yes, but not on C: drive. They do exist on a 2nd hard disk (temporarily borrowed from another PC) in Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt. The Grphflt (Graphics filters?) directory does not exist on my C: drive. Should this have been created at some point?
Don't forget that when I close and re-launch IE I can save pics for a while before I get the error message so I'm not sure a missing file is the whole answer.
A thought has ocurred - does anything count the number of pics which has been saved which could generate this error if a limit is reached?
Just read your last post..one of the following suggestions was total cleaning of all caches...Anyways this is a last stab..will not bother you again. I call this a "collection" ...LOL
Suggestion [1] (all from various forums)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disable Content Advisor
"..When Content Advisor is enabled, you can save or print a Web page only after it passes through Content Advisor. You cannot save or print a Web page by right-clicking an HTML link and then clicking Save Target As or Print Target, because this method bypasses Content Advisor..."
This seems to tie in with the following I found in another post...
Errors that start with [blue]8007[/blue]:
<8007 The file replication service cannot satisfy the request because the user has insufficient privileges. The event log may have more information. FRS_ERR_INSUFFICIENT_PRIV > [This from:
]
I tried URL and found Url assimilated and redirection to MSDN site that spoke in a totally unfamiliar jargon
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suggestion [2]
Seems like cleaning up caches..........but who knows
seems to tie in with this message
BTW, an IE5 window just opened by itself, saying my
computer is spying on me, suggesting I download a version
of the cleanbrowser program. here's the web page address
any ideas if this is
the cause?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suggestion [3]
This doesn't explain the failure to save images, which Microsoft blames on the particular server using "HTTP 1.1 transfer-chunk encoding". However, the error code is slightly different., so this may be something that hasn't made it into the Knowledgebase yet.
You need a component of Outlook Express to right click and Save as according to MKB
Is your Inetcomm.dll a match for IE Explorer 6.0?...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Suggestion [4]
Try disabling the Active Desktop by right clicking on the desktop and de-
selecting that option. Now try to recreate the error message.
Reghakr - I didn't move directory, files are on a C drive temp borrowed from another PC. I copied that directory to C: but no difference. I have 4 entries under that key but all relate to *pcx. Office not installed on this C drive yet
Smitee - thanks for the 'collection'. Results as follows:
1 - I have never enabled Content Advisor.
2 - I have cleaned, swept, de-fragged and removed unused registry keys but no difference.
3 - I do not have IE6. I don't know what Inetcomm.dll does but I tried a different version of it - again, no difference.
4 - I have never enabled Active Desktop.
This error message is really beginning to annoy me now - I'm sorry if it's bugging everyone else too.
