In IE 5, is there a way to set a DEFAULT location to save files in?
When my people click on File, Save As.., they want the dialog box to ALWAYS open to a certain directory. Thus far, I don't see a way to do it. Any ideas?
Thanx,

Hi.
If you saveany file in theyour desired folder, then that folder will remain the default until you save to a different location.

Hope this helps ;-)
Cheers

Thanks for the thought, but I am already aware of that. I'd like to set a permanent location that IE always defaults to, just like you can set in Word, Excel, WP, etc...

You can try this, but I don't think it's permanent:

Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer
Right-click on the DownloadDirectory entry, choose modify and type in your path information here.

You would need a 3rd party app to grey out the control of the drop-down location list box. A program called Cooler can do this:

This may prevent downloads altoghether:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

Create the neccessary keys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft, then right-click on the Restrictions key, choose new>DWORD value, name it NoSelectDownloadDir and give it a value of 1.

I know about that Registry key, and no it is NOT permanent.
If you change the DownloadDirectory entry, it just works for the first time you save something, and then reverts to wherever you wind up actually saving something.

As for the software, I'll look into it, but I was hoping for something built in.

Here's a freeware program that may help, haven't tested it myself:

IE Security

From the developer: "Internet Explorer Security is an utility that customizes many aspects of the Internet Explorer Web browser. It's a snap to use and provides the tools you need to retain and manage your Web browser settings. It lets you disable individual menu items and prevent others from editing your Favorites. It also allows you to disable individual tabs in the Internet Options dialog, as well as specific settings from each tab. Still other settings let you change the title caption, toolbar background, and animated icon; change default folders; and replace standard error information pages. It allows you to manage security zones very easy. The powerful 'Web Spy' feature enables you control web sites which users may view. Multiuser support and password protection are also offered."
