Save for Web not keeping Transparency 2

I have an image that I'm trying to save as a transparent gif but PhotoShop (7) won't let me. Every time I choose "Save for Web" and select gif, it puts a white background behind the image. Even if I delete the backgound layer, PS still puts a white background. I tried saving it as a png instead, and this saves it like I want. Everything looks great in FireFox, but IE puts a gray background behind the image, so this isn't going to work.

How can I save my image for the web so that it holds it's transparency?

Hope This Helps!

Have you checked the 'transparency' checkbox in the 'Save for Web' dialog box?

In the 'save for web dialog box', is the background chequered or plain white?
Code:
Everything looks great in FireFox,
Looks like you are creating a transparent gif, otherwise it would have a white background in all browsers.
Are you using Frontpage for creating your pages?

Keith

As audiopro says, is it checkered? If so, check your map matte settings. If PNG, make sure is PNG 8 - 24 doesn't go so well with IE.

The image itself has a checkered background but when I go to "save for web" and select gif, it is white. If I select png, it is checkered. The png shows up correctly in FF, but with a gray background in IE. The gif displays a white background in both browsers. I use notepad to code my pages.

Hope This Helps!

I have been clicking around in the 'save for web' box and can sometimes get a white background when transparency is set to 'on', although not sure exactly what does it.
Selecting one of the 'gif' options within the 'settings' drop down box clears it back to a chequered background.
It is obviously an odd fault as none of the regular 'experts' have offered advice, lol!

ECAR, although I cannot offer any solution as to why your transparency does not work with gifs - I may be able to provide some insight on how to get the PNG to work in IE.

The problem lies in the fact that IE does not support alpha transparency (well.... IE7 does), so to get it to work in IE you have to apply a little CSS trickery. Here is a detailed page with examples that clearly explains the problem and the solution:

Depending on what the image is, have you reduced the number of colors in the gif? Only use the number of colors necessary. You can select any color from the palette in the save for web window and trash it.

Thanks guys. I wound up just changing images and doing away with the transparency. I know I've done it before with other gifs, so I'm just going to pull up those psd files and check all of the "Save for Web" settings to see how I did it with them.

Thanks for the links, though. Especially the CSS trickery for IE! I'm a programmer, not a graphics guy, so that's right up my ally!
