-unlike the save for web operation in PhotoshopCS, the IllustratorCS tool leaves a thin band of pixel space as a 'halo' around the image. has anyone run into this?
-i tried creating a new file with the exact dimensions of the image, and then pasting the image into that file, but it is still adding a halo when optimized for the web.

any help would be appreciated, thanks-
jason

Try turning on Pixel preview and check 'snap to pixel'. (TIP: You can make your grid 1 pixel wide and turn that on if you want to see the object snapping to the pixels!)

Because you are working in vector you are able to draw lines inbetween or smaller than pixels. When it gets rasterized for the web if your artwork lays halfway across a pixel the rest of the pixel will get turned to solid white.

You could also save as a gif with transparent background to avoid this but if you need to save as Jpeg the above suggestion should work for you!

thank you.
that took care of it.
