Save contents of email to database?

(Please forgive me if this isn't in the proper forum)

Some support sites allow users to submit "help" requests via email. These are then loaded into the support database and case numbers issued, confirmation emails sent, etc.

My question: how does the automated process access and load the email into the DB? (presuming it's part of the site's scripting)

If they are doing it through email it would be more difficult because you would have to parse all the data an then Insert it into the DB. This could be difficult with various email types as well as formats.
I suspect what you are referring to is a form the user fills out with their email address and the error and other info which could then easily Inserted into the DB.
 
Actually, the form is not what I'm referring to.

With the company that hosts my web site, if I need to contact them, I can send an email to a specified address (support@wherever.com) and it gets added as a support incident, appearing in my open support tickets.

Or when they send me an automated message upon receipt of a support incident via form, any replies I make for follow-up etc(as long as the subject line isn't changed) appear in my account nearly instantaneously.

Below is an example of the automated letter, in case that sheds some light:

This email is to notify you that a support ticket has been created for yourdomain.com.

Your ticket number is #Ticket9999.

To follow up with this support ticket or to provide additional comments, reply to this email and DO NOT CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE.

It is also helpful to provide the contents of this email when replying.

support@wherever.com

But the initial request, and follow-ups, may come from emails and not from a form submission.
